Maddison Avenue - Stage Time 3pm - 4:45pm

Maddison Avenue is a country rock 'n roll outfit made up of seasoned professional musicians based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Their debut self-titled EP delivers a dose of rich harmony and traditional rock rhythm, channeled through a smooth, rootsy vocal performance. “…the thoughtfully arranged songs, the passionate singing and careful production all combine to make this particular six-song release sound like something from Toronto rather than Halifax.” – Reviewer, Ron Foley Macdonald (May 2008) The contrasting sounds of guest pedal steel, Dale Murray, and an expert horn section – Maddison studied saxophone and his bandmates happen to also play in Halifax’s funk soul super group the Mellotones – results in a fest for the listener: a perfect blend of the eclectic and the traditional. Lead by singer/songwriter, Keith Maddison, the band got their first break at JunoFest 2006 with a featured showcase. Their sound has been compared to Bob Seger, Van Morrison, the Rolling Stones, and even the Black Crows. Recorded at Echo Chamber Audio in Halifax, “Maddison and his cronies rock hard, bring the noise and the pain. Tuff beats, kool tunes, chops ...the whole package. Get on board the Maddison Avenue bus or lose your mind!" - Charles Austin, Echo Chamber Audio “Halifax-based Maddison Avenue's self-titled debut EP is a catchy blend of gritty rock and country beats not unlike Van Morrison, Tom Petty and CCR. The addition of professional horn players (including members of local funk-factory The Mellotones) adds a rich jazzy tone to the mix--it bursts with vocal harmonies and keyboard solos that will pull you onto the dance floor. The first track, ‘Look How Far We've Come,’ is a great opener for the album since it traces the journey from 'Down in the basement, with my good friends playin' vids/makin' fun of the kids on the other side of the city’ to the success they've reached today.” - Genevieve MacIntyre, The Coast

  Kelly Sloan - Stage Time 5pm - 6:45pm

n21000979_32323797_8711

With a warming nostalgia at its core, Kelly Sloan’s Always Changes, carries an air of experience. Cycling through a variety of genres and production techniques, each song graduates beyond the commonplace. Opener, “Hurricane,” sets this tone with slow strums and the warning “Somebody’s going to take it all away.” Accented by ambient guitars and a swirling organ, it builds into the chanting finale of, “I will bring, a hurricane.” Hushed and ominous, it’s the perfect entry point to this accomplished debut.

A native of the Ottawa Valley, Sloan initially cut her teeth performing with Adam Puddington. A preeminent purveyor of Canadiana, his roots driven and literary songwriting style made a lasting impression. In 2007, Sloan traveled to Nova Scotia to work on his new record, Back In Town. Following the sessions, she decided to remain in Dartmouth, NS.

Shortly after, Sloan began work on her own songs for the first time. Upon the suggestion of her roommates and former Guthries members, Dale and Brian Murray, she wrote and tracked her first composition, “Only Dance Slow With You.” Encouraged to continue with new material…and with none to draw on, Sloan found herself trying to outpace the recording process with songwriting.

“We had the equipment so it was just a matter of creating some material,” claims Sloan. “We managed to whip the first song off in a couple of hours, so they suggested I should probably write another song. Most of them went so quickly that I had to keep running back upstairs to pen another song. Before I knew it, I had an album and thought, ’shit, now I have to do something with this.’ I was writing death certificates at the time, so anything would have been better.”

The resulting, Always Changes, features guests Kinley Dowling, Dan Ledwell, Adam Baldwin, Ruth Minnikin, Rob Crowell, Serge Samson and The Stables. Produced by the Murray brothers and Sloan, the album ranges from the ragtime-feel of “Waiting” to elegant strings of  “Sophia.” With a grounding tone set by opener, “Hurricane,” Always Changes shows remarkable range and depth for a songwriter so early in her career.

Aside from her solo work, Sloan has been performing around the East Coast regularly, backing artists such as Matt Mays, Ruth Minnikin, and Christina Martin.

Johnny Oliver - Stage Time 7pm - 8:45pm

Johnny Oliver Singer / Songwriter from Summerside Prince Edward Island, has been performing his original songs for over 20 years. After building up a life time of original music, Johnny decided to take his talents to the studio. His long overdue first album was released in May 2008. The name of his debut album ‘The Reason’ was inspired by a true story about the  Halifax Christmas Daddies Telethon and how it began.

The album ‘The Reason’ shows the versatility by which Johnny writes, one can clearly see in his writing from where some of his influences come. He has a very strong country background, with a bit of blues, folk, rock and even some bluegrass mixed in. Growing up, Johnny listened to the likes of Merle Haggard, Travis Tritt, George Thorogood, Bob Segar along with numerous others.

In the summer of 2008 Zuno Films Inc, a company based out of Montréal, Québec produced a film on the Island called, ‘Looking for Anne’. Three of Johnny's songs are featured in the movie, Still In Love With You, Free To Be Alone and Take Me As I Am,  all from his debut album, ‘The Reason’.

After receiving two nominations, at the 2009 P.E.I. Music Awards, Male Vocalist and Country Recording of the Year, Johnny felt like he was on the right path, staying true to his belief that he and his music had a place in the music industry.  This also supported his desire to continue to produce his original material.

Feeling very satisfied with his debut album, Johnny went back into the Studio to produce his second album ‘I’m Not Up For Sale’ at Guernsey Cove Parlour Productions with Gordon Belsher.  However he wanted to step it up a notch by showing a greater diversity with his choice of songs, while still staying true to his country roots. In the lead track, ‘Hardcore Angel’, Johnny takes this driving country tune to a new level with a powerful vocal performance. In ‘I’m Not Up For Sale’ Johnny sings a heartfelt ballad about on how far a man can fall and still stand tall and hold onto his pride.
